The Table View Lions cordially invite the community to their annual Cheese and Wine Gala and theatre show to raise funds for the construction of a sick room at the Masikhululeke Educare Center in Joe Slovo.
Masikhululeke is an encouraging story of success through perseverance and dedication, which began in 1990 when Vivian Nuxola Dlabantu, a mother of two and a qualified teacher, took in young children roaming between shacks and rubbish heaps in Joe Slovo, to keep them safe. As the numbers grew, she bought with her own money a rusty, windowless shipping container, a paraffin cooker and pots, and single-handed educated and fed 40 pre-school children.
Running her ‘school’ with an admirable balance of good discipline and fun, popular demand soon outgrew the facilities. Knocking on doors, Vivian received assistance from charities and the City in leasing a piece of ground, registering a pre-school and erecting a 2-room building. In 2009 a 3rd classroom followed. Today Masikhululeke teaches 90 children and includes a registered Grade R class.
The Table View Lions have supported Vivian and Masikhululeke from the beginning and now plan the construction of the sick room as required by the Education Department. To assist with the funding they invite the community’s support of the Gala.
Tickets cost R110pp and are available from Celeste Whyte – 083 401 3322, firstname.lastname@example.org
