Blind Tandem Cape Argus Rider with Lions sponsorship

In 2011 the Lions Club of Table View very kindly donated a Cannondale Tandem Bicycle to Jacques Lombard, who is blind and diabetic, and me.   We use it regularly every weekend and in March this year entered and completed our third ‘Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum’ Cycle Tour.

As usual there were 35,000 entrants with groups of around 500 leaving every 3 or 4 minutes from the Civic Centre in Cape Town. Our group set off at 6.44 am (our earliest time ever which meant rising at 4am!) and headed towards Edinburgh Drive, down the Blue Route, through Muizenberg, Simon’s Town and up Smitwinkel, listening on the way to cries from cyclists cursing the very strong ‘Cape Doctor’! (why am I doing this?!). Reward came however after turning towards Scarborough when, with the wind behind us, we continued through the beautiful Misty Cliffs, up and over ‘Chappies’,  the dreaded Suikerbossie, on to Camps Bay and finishing in Green Point.

The wind this year put paid to any thought of bettering last year’s time and we clocked 6 hours 15 mins. Yes, it was tough at times but so satisfying when you cross the finish line. Shall we do it all over again next year, experience those climbs and sore bums again?  Of course we will, the little bit of madness in all of us will lure us back!

Our club has also sponsored the upkeep of the tandem bicycle to make sure that it is roadworthy.
